Biography

John Philip's Esq is the founding partner of Ashford Gray and one of the most formidable trial lawyers in the United States. With over two and a half decades at the forefront of corporate litigation and commercial dispute resolution, Jonathan has built a reputation for delivering outcomes that others consider unachievable.

After reading Jurisprudence at Oxford and graduating with First Class Honours, Jonathan went on to Harvard Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude and was Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Law Review. He trained at Linklaters before establishing Ashford Gray in 1999 alongside co-founder Margaret Gray.

Jonathan specialises in high-value commercial litigation, international arbitration, and complex corporate disputes — regularly acting for FTSE 100 companies, private equity sponsors, and high-net-worth individuals in proceedings before the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and international arbitral tribunals including the ICC and LCIA.

His landmark cases include a £340 million breach of warranty claim in the M&A context, a successful defence of a major financial institution in a multi-jurisdictional fraud investigation, and a precedent-setting Supreme Court appeal on director fiduciary duties. Jonathan is described by peers as "a titan of the Bar — technically brilliant and utterly unrelenting in pursuit of his client's interests."
